The CEO of CrowdStrike has issued a heartfelt apology to the company’s clients and partners for the disruption caused to their Windows systems, shedding light on the error that led to the catastrophe.
In a blog post titled “Our Statement on Today’s Outage” on the company’s website, CrowdStrike’s founder and CEO George Kurtz expressed his deep regret for the outage that occurred. He emphasized that the entire CrowdStrike team is fully aware of the seriousness and consequences of the situation.
Kurtz clarified that the global computer shutdown on July 19 was not a result of a cyberattack, reiterating the company’s previous communication on the matter.
However, he carefully worded his statements to imply that the Falcon security platform was not at fault and that the incident was purely accidental.
What triggered the CrowdStrike crash?
“The outage was triggered by a flaw identified in a Falcon content update for Windows hosts,” Kurtz explained, framing the flaw as a naturally occurring issue discovered by his team.
The faulty content update was rolled out to Windows devices running the Falcon sensor at 04:09 UTC on Friday, with a resolution deployed just 79 minutes later, as detailed in a separate blog post released by the company on Saturday.
