Centuries ago, Tlingit hunters navigated icy waters in southeast Alaska, hunting seals near the Hubbard glacier. They respected the spirits of nature, seeking permission for their hunt and showing gratitude for the animals they caught. Today, the elders in Yakutat village share stories of their ancestors’ connection to the land and sea.
As the glacier retreated, tribes settled in Yakutat, adapting their hunting practices to protect the environment. The community continues to rely on the land and sea for sustenance, with harbor seals playing a vital role in their diet and traditions.
However, the seal population has dwindled due to past commercial hunting and environmental changes. To preserve their way of life, the residents are combining traditional knowledge with modern conservation efforts.
As an Arctic archaeologist and a Tlingit tribal historian, we are working together to understand the historical context of this situation and find sustainable solutions for the future.
