Coalition of Media Outlets Urges Federal Investigation into Google’s Removal of California News Links


The News/Media‍ Alliance, previously known as the ⁤Newspaper Association ‌of America, has called⁤ on US federal agencies to look into⁣ Google’s decision to remove links ​to California news outlets. This​ move by Google‍ comes ‌in⁢ light of the proposed California Journalism Preservation⁢ Act (CJPA), which would mandate tech companies​ like Google to compensate California publishers for sharing their⁣ news ⁤content.

Representing​ more than 2,200 publishers, the News/Media‌ Alliance ⁤penned letters to⁣ the Department of ​Justice, Federal Trade Commission, and California State Attorney​ General. They believe that Google’s removal of these links could be seen as an attempt to pressure or retaliate against the pending legislative measure in Sacramento.

The CJPA aims to establish a system where tech ‍giants, including Google, would have to pay California media organizations ⁢for featuring their content through links. This bill successfully made its‍ way through the state Assembly last year.
