A recent report from the UN has revealed that China is taking the lead in generative AI inventions, surpassing the U.S. by filing six times more patents in this field. Generative AI technology utilizes existing data to create text, images, music, and code, with over 50,000 patent applications in the past decade. This surge in generative AI patents signifies a significant growth in the technology sector, according to WIPO.
Christopher Harrison, WIPO’s patent analytics manager, highlighted the rapid expansion of generative AI and predicted further advancements in the future. China, with over 38,000 generative AI inventions filed between 2014 and 2023, has shown remarkable progress compared to the U.S., which filed only 6,276 patents during the same period.
Notably, China’s patent applications cover various sectors such as publishing, autonomous driving, and document management. Other key players in generative AI innovation include South Korea, Japan, and India, with India showing the fastest growth rate among them.
Leading the way in generative AI patents are companies like ByteDance, Alibaba Group, and Microsoft, indicating the widespread impact of this technology across different industries. Harrison emphasized the transformative potential of generative AI in sectors like publishing, transportation, security, and science, with applications like chatbots revolutionizing customer service.
As the demand for generative AI continues to rise, WIPO anticipates a surge in patent filings in the near future, signaling a promising outlook for innovation in this field.
