Britons and Americans reported missing in tragic yacht sinking during Sicilian storm

A tragic incident unfolded off the‍ coast of Sicily as a super yacht carrying 22 individuals sank during severe weather conditions, leaving four Britons, two Americans, and a⁢ Canadian missing.

Fortunately, fifteen people were rescued by dedicated coastguard patrol boats and firefighters, including a young child, from the sunken 56-meter sailing vessel ⁢named Bayesian.

Despite the valiant rescue efforts, one body was recovered near the wreckage, while six others ⁣remain unaccounted for, as confirmed⁤ by Luca Cari, a⁣ spokesperson⁣ for the Italian fire rescue service.

The Italian coastguard revealed that the tragic incident occurred early in the morning after a violent storm caused the British-flagged yacht to sink near Porticello, with a crew of 10 and 12 passengers onboard.

Divers are currently undertaking a challenging mission to reach the submerged hull, which ⁤now rests at a depth of approximately 49 meters, while authorities are conducting a thorough ⁢investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sinking.

Eight survivors, including the young child, have been hospitalized and are reported to be in stable ⁢condition following the ordeal.

The luxury⁤ yacht, built by renowned Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008, boasted impressive features such as an aluminium hull, a top speed of 15 knots, and accommodation for up to 12 ‌guests and a crew of 10.

Departing from Milazzo on 14 August, the yacht was last located east of Palermo before the tragic ‌incident occurred, with reports suggesting that a ⁤waterspout may have played a role in the vessel’s sinking.

Our thoughts are with the families ‍and loved ones⁤ of those affected by this devastating event.
