Brief outage of ChatGPT caused by bug exposing user chat histories

On Monday, ChatGPT experienced an outage and became temporarily inaccessible after some users discovered a bug that allowed them to see the titles of other people’s chat histories. Screenshots of the ChatGPT UI were posted on social networks like Reddit and Twitter, showing sidebars populated with chats that did not belong to the users. Although they could only see the titles and not the entirety of other people’s conversations, the incident highlights the importance of being cautious when sharing details or writing up questions for the chatbot.

An OpenAI spokesperson informed Bloomberg that the company temporarily disabled ChatGPT after becoming aware of these reports. The issue was caused by a bug in an open-source software that the company has yet to name, and OpenAI is still investigating to determine the exact trigger.
