With over 30,000 Boeing employees ready to strike on Friday, production of most aircraft will come to a halt as workers overwhelmingly turned down a new labor agreement. This setback is costly for the manufacturer, which has been working hard to increase production and rebuild its reputation after facing safety challenges.
In the Seattle area and Oregon, workers voted 94.6% against the proposed deal between Boeing and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers that was revealed last Sunday. The decision to strike was supported by 96% of the workers, well above the required two-thirds majority.
“We will commence our strike at midnight,” announced IAM District 751 President Jon Holden during a press conference where he highlighted instances of unfair treatment towards factory workers such as discrimination, coercion, surveillance, and false promises of benefits.
Holden emphasized the need for Boeing to engage in fair negotiations moving forward.
