Senegal’s Constitutional ⁣Council has officially declared opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the winner of the presidential election, paving the way for his inauguration as the country’s fifth president on April 2.

The top court ⁣validated provisional results announced on Wednesday, confirming Faye’s victory with over 54 percent of the votes,⁤ while his closest competitor, ruling coalition candidate Amadou‌ Ba, secured about 35 percent.

Faye, an anti-establishment ​candidate and ally of popular opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, has been hailed as Africa’s youngest president at the age of 44.

The African Union ‌and French President Emmanuel Macron have both ‍extended warm congratulations to Faye, expressing their desire to⁣ strengthen partnerships with Senegal.
