Australia experienced its hottest August on record, with temperatures soaring 3C above average nationwide. As September began, parts of New South Wales faced total fire bans due to the scorching conditions. The Bureau of Meteorology reported that August temperatures were a staggering 3.03C above the long-term average, surpassing the previous record set in 2009. Winter 2024 was also ranked as the second hottest on record, with temperatures 1.48C above average. Climate scientists have labeled the extreme heatwave since mid-August as “gobsmacking,” attributing it to global heating. Dr. Simon Grainger, a senior climatologist, highlighted the significant impact of these heat events, emphasizing the role of high ocean temperatures in setting the stage for the heatwave. Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland all experienced record winter highs, with temperatures exceeding 10C above average in many areas. The highest winter temperature on record, 41.6C, was recorded in Yampi Sound. The NSW Rural Fire Service issued total fire bans for Sydney and the Illawarra region, emphasizing the elevated fire risk due to dry and warm conditions. Inspector Ben Shepherd urged preparedness and emphasized the likelihood of warmer than average conditions in the coming months. The Australasian Fire And Emergency Services Authorities Council is set to release a bushfire risk outlook for spring later this week.
