According to reports from Bloomberg, Apple is set to revolutionize the way users manage passwords with the upcoming launch of a dedicated app called Passwords. This new app, part of the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 updates, aims to simplify the login process for websites and software, promoting secure passwords and enhancing device privacy.
By introducing the Passwords app, Apple will directly compete with popular third-party password managers like 1Password and LastPass, offering users the option to import passwords from these services. Scheduled to debut on June 10 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the Passwords app will leverage iCloud Keychain to sync passwords and account information across multiple devices, streamlining the user experience.
In addition to managing passwords, the app will categorize logins into different sections, support Passkeys technology for secure authentication using Face ID and Touch ID, and enable auto-filling of data on websites and apps. Not limited to Apple devices, the Passwords app will also be compatible with the Vision Pro headset and Windows computers, functioning as an authentication app with support for verification codes similar to Google Authenticator.
The unveiling of Passwords at WWDC will be accompanied by announcements showcasing Apple’s advancements in artificial intelligence, including features like notification summaries, instant photo editing, AI-generated emojis, and improvements to the Siri digital assistant. Furthermore, Apple is expected to reveal a partnership with OpenAI to integrate the ChatGPT chatbot into its ecosystem.
This development comes amidst reports of Nvidia surpassing Apple as the second most valuable company, signaling a shift in Silicon Valley’s hierarchy. Nvidia’s AI-driven rally on Wall Street has propelled it ahead of Apple, with the company also announcing a stock split set to take place on June 7. The competition between tech giants continues to drive innovation and reshape the industry landscape.
