U.S. Vetoes U.N. Resolution Urging Gaza Cease-Fire
The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. The reason behind this decision was that the resolution did not include the condition of releasing hostages held in Gaza.
During negotiations, we emphasized the importance of linking the cease-fire to the release of hostages. A lasting solution to end the conflict must involve freeing these individuals, as previously stated by this council. These objectives are closely intertwined. Unfortunately, this resolution failed to address this crucial aspect, leading to our inability to support it. In essence, approving this resolution would have conveyed a dangerous message to Hamas – discouraging them from returning to negotiations while American citizens remain captive in their hands. We are committed to not forgetting them and will persist in seeking a diplomatic path towards peace, security, and freedom for Palestinians in Gaza.
