Amazon has filed a motion in the Western Washington district court to request the dismissal of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) antitrust lawsuit against it. The FTC, along with 17 state attorneys general, sued Amazon in September, alleging that the company engages in monopolistic practices that are unfair to both competitors and consumers. Amazon argues that the FTC has not presented evidence to support the claim that its practices have led to higher prices or harmed consumers, as reported by Bloomberg.
The FTC’s lawsuit accuses Amazon of using illegal tactics to eliminate competition. These tactics include punishing sellers who offer better prices on other platforms by burying their listings in search results and pressuring sellers to use Amazon’s fulfillment service by tying it to Prime eligibility. The suit also claims that Amazon inflated prices between 2016 and 2018 using an algorithmic tool called Project Nessie, resulting in over $1 billion in additional costs.
