Amazon palm-scanning technology being tested by Panera Bread

A Panera Bread restaurant in Novato, California has posted a sign on its exterior. The bakery-cafe chain is piloting Amazon’s palm-scanning technology in St. Louis to offer customers a faster way to connect to their loyalty program and pay. Panera Bread has been considered a leader in restaurant technology and is the latest restaurant to use Amazon One. Amazon One has already been implemented in dozens of Amazon-owned Whole Foods locations, Amazon Go stores, and some stadiums and arenas. With more than 2,000 locations and over 52 million members in its loyalty program, Panera Bread represents a big expansion opportunity for Amazon One. However, for now, Panera is starting small, with just two company-owned restaurants in its hometown of St. Louis. A representative for Amazon declined to share data on existing signups for the palm-based payment system.
