An ex-employee of Amazon has made serious allegations against the company, claiming that it breached UK sanctions by selling facial recognition technology to Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine, as reported by The Financial Times.
Charles Forrest, who was dismissed in 2023, accused Amazon of various wrongdoings between November 2022 and May 2023. These accusations were brought to light during a recent hearing at a London employment tribunal.
Forrest revealed that Amazon had struck a deal with a Russian company, VisionLabs, to provide access to its Rekognition facial recognition technology. This deal was facilitated through a shell company in the Netherlands, according to tribunal documents. He also alleged that Amazon violated its own ban on police use of facial recognition technology, which was put in place after the tragic death of George Floyd.
